Save - Carry-save adder

A carry-save adder is a type of digital adder, used in computer microarchitecture to compute the sum of three or more n-bit numbers in binary. It differs from other digital adders in that it outputs two numbers of the same dimensions as the inputs, one which is a sequence of partial sum bits and another which is a sequence of carry bits.

The carry-save unit consists of n full adders, each of which computes a single sum and carry bit based solely on the corresponding bits of the three input numbers. Given the three n - bit numbers a, b, and c, it produces a partial sum ps and a shift-carry sc:

<math>ps_i = a_i \oplus b_i \oplus c_i</math>
<math>sc_i = (a_i \wedge b_i) \vee (a_i \wedge c_i) \vee (b_i \wedge c_i)</math>

The entire sum can then be computed by:

  1. Shifting the carry sequence sc left by one place.
  2. Appending a 0 to the front (most significant bit) of the partial sum sequence ps.
  3. Using a ripple carry adder to add these two together and produce the resulting n + 1-bit value.

When adding together three or more numbers, using a carry-save adder followed by a ripple carry adder is faster than using two ripple carry adders. This is because a ripple carry adder cannot compute a sum bit without waiting for the previous carry bit to be produced, and thus has a delay equal to that of n full adders. A carry-save adder, however, produces all of its output values in parallel, and thus has the same delay as a single full-adder. Thus the total computation time (in units of full-adder delay time) for a carry-save adder plus a ripple carry adder is n + 1, whereas for two ripple carry adders it would be 2n.

Save - Wireless Multimedia Extensions

Wireless Multimedia Extensions (WME), also known as Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM) is a Wi-Fi Alliance interoperability certification, based on the IEEE 802.11e draft standard. It provides basic Quality of service (QoS) features to IEEE 802.11 networks. WMM prioritizes traffic according to four AC (Access Categories) - voice, video, best effort, and background. However, it does not provide guaranteed throughput. It is suitable for simple applications that require QoS, such as Voice over IP (VoIP) on Wi-Fi phones.

Power Save Certification

The Wi-Fi Alliance has added Power Save Certification to the WMM specification. Power Save uses mechanisms from 802.11e and legacy 802.11 to save power (for battery powered equipment) and fine-tune power consumption.
The certification provides an indication that the certified product is targeted for power critical applications like hand-phones and portable power devices.
The underlying concept of WMM PowerSave is that the STA triggers the release of buffered data from the AP by sending an uplink data frame. Upon receipt of such a data (trigger) frame the AP releases previously buffered data stored in each of its queues. Queues may be configured to be trigger enabled, i.e. a receipt of a data frame corresponding to the queue acts as trigger, and delivery enabled, i.e. data stored at those queues will be released upon receipt of a frame. Queues refer to the 4 ACs defined for WMM.

The Babati Link Group (BLG) is an educational link between King Edward VI Five Ways School and Babati Day Secondary School, Babati, Manyara, Tanzania. Formed in 2003, it exists to promote friendship and share educational resources between the two schools.

So far, Babati Day has benefitted from new facilities such as renovation of several classroom blocks and the donation of books and other teaching resources. More importantly, both parties have benefitted from the opportunity to meet and make friends with people from different cultures, and to experience those cultures by visiting each other’s schools.

During the group’s existence there have been several key visits made by parties from both schools, including:

  • The inaugural trip by students and staff from Five Ways in 2003
  • A brief visit by FW pupils as part of World Challenge Kilimanjaro 2004
  • A summer excursion of 2005 by FW pupils and staff
  • Exchanges of Babati Day staff in 2003 and 2005
  • In the summer of 2006, a small team of present and former pupils traveled to Babati to construct a computer science department at Babati day - the most ambitious phase of the link to date.
  • A group of 28 students from KEFW visited Babati in the summer of 2007 to carry out maintanance work and teach English and I.T.

The Babati Link group is fully dependent on donations to survive

Saved - Minimal impairment test

Minimal Impairment Test

The Minimal Impairment Test is part of the Oakes Test used by the Canadian Supreme Court. The Oakes Test is used to determine whether legislation, which may infringe upon a right guaranteed under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, is saved under Section 1 of the Charter.<ref>http://www.mapleleafweb.com/features/constitution/charter/05.html</ref>

Section 1 of the Charter

Section 1 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms dictates that guaranteed rights and freedoms may be subject to reasonable limitations “as demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society.”<ref>http://laws.justice.gc.ca/en/charter/index.html</ref> Simply put, legislation may impede rights, but not unreasonably.

Oakes Test

To determine if an infringement of rights through legislation is demonstrably justfied the Supreme Court of Canada applies the Oakes Test, a precedent set in 1986’s R. v. Oakes. The Oakes Test is comprised of two parts: sufficient importance and porportionality <ref>http://www.mapleleafweb.com/features/constitution/charter/05.html</ref>. Minimal Impairment falls under porportionality, and requires that in order for legislation to be saved under section 1 the violation must minimally infringe upon the right/freedom.<ref>http://www.mapleleafweb.com/features/constitution/charter/05.html</ref>
