Saved - Pefko (Messenia), Greece

Pefko or “Πευκο” is a small but scenic Greek village in Messenia, west of the Tayegetus Mountain and in between Sparta and Kalamata. The village has been called “Pefko” (meaning “pine tree” in Greek) for the past few decades.

History

Name

The village used to be called “Μπαλα” or Balla meaning “ball” in local Greek dialect, but the name was changed as the government erroneously thought that the name was of Slavic origins.
In actuality, Balla is a Greek word (of Italian origins) and the name of the village comes from a story involving a cannonball which saved the lives of those who would go on to found the village.
According to local tradition, when the Ottoman Turks were coming to conquer the Peloponnesus, a cannon was brought to the city of Kalamata.
It was prophecized that through this cannon the local Greeks would be saved.
After the Ottoman Turks defeated the Byzantine Greek forces and their Venetian allies, some Greeks in desperation fired the cannon into the air.
A priest told them that where this cannon ball landed, they would find refuge.
The cannonball was found in a small valley between two hills, and the village of Balla, which would later become Pefko, was founded there.
The villagers named their town Balla after the cannonball that saved them from the Turks.

Indeed, whether or not the myth of the village’s founding is true, the location of Balla/Pefko saved it from Turkish occupation.
The orientation of the village was very strategic, as it is hidden between two rises making it very hard for the Turks and other occupiers to find.
Balla/Pefko was a major center of guerrilla resistance activities against both the Turks and the Germans, the latter who found the village and burned it due to the villagers activities in resisting the Nazi occupation.
The village was also partially destroyed in the 1970s due to rockslides, but later rebuilt.

Nikitaras

Nikitaras, a hero of the Greek Revolution known as “Τουρκοφαγος” orTourkophagos or “eater of Turks” successfully hid in Balla when he was being hunted by the authorities.
The old stone house where the hero stayed still stands. It is owned by the Yannelis family, having miraculously survived both German attacks and rockslides so far.

Economic activities

Agriculture, specifically olive farming, is the main economic activity in the village.
Raising sheep and goats has also been a traditional form of economic activity for villagers.
Lack of economic opportunities has led to emigration from the village, mainly to larger Greek cities such as Kalamata, Patras and Athens.

Save - Quetzal file format

Quetzal is a standardised file format for the saved state of Z-machine games, invented by Martin Frost. Prior to the introduction of Quetzal, each Z-machine interpreter saved games in its own format; Quetzal enabled players to begin a game on one architecture (for example, a pocket computer) and end it on another. Use of the format is strongly recommended in Graham Nelson’s Z-machine standards document, but not obligatory. Most modern Z-machines have the ability to save Quetzal files.

The files are IFF files with a FORM of “IFZS” (presumably standing for “interactive fiction Z-machine save”), although the saved files are commonly given an extension of “sav”: less commonly sighted are “quz” and “qtz”. Despite the reference to the Z-machine in the FORM code, the format has proved flexible enough to be adapted for at least one alternative architecture, Glulx.

The format’s name is a backronym for “Quetzal Unifies Efficiently The Z-Machine Archive Language”.

Version 1.3b, which is widely available, contains a bug later corrected in version 1.4: after a save instruction, the Z-machine requires that a success code is saved in a particular place (which differs depending on the version). Versions of the Quetzal standard before 1.4 have reference only to the instruction after the save, which complicates finding the correct place to put the success code.

Save ice - K Ice

K Ice is an alcoholic, flavoured soft drink (alcopop) served at the Oxford Union amongst other places. It is separated into the flavours Lemon, Red and Blue, with the latter two flavours loosely based on cranberry and blueberry flavourings.

K Ice is renowned for containing more sugar than alcohol (this is unconfirmed since the labels carry no accurate information) and consuming more than one K Ice in a single evening is not recommended practice — such behaviour has been known to lead to sugar-fuelled spasms that do not subside until well into the early hours of the following morning.

Numerous internet searches for K Ice have yielded no results, suggesting that the drink is supplied by black market sources. Nonetheless, this is unlikely to dent the superiority or popularity of K Ice, but merely to add to its appeal amongst inebriated students.

Saved progress - OpenEdge Advanced Business Language

OpenEdge Advanced Business Language, or OpenEdge ABL for short, is a business application development language created and maintained by Progress Software Corporation (PSC). The language, typically classified as a fourth-generation programming language, uses an English like syntax to simplify software development.<ref name=”p2″>Campbell, John, Programmer’s Progress, a guide to the progress language. white star software, 1991</ref> The name was changed [in 2006] to OpenEdge Advanced Business Language (OpenEdge ABL), by PSC, from PROGRESS, a.k.a. OpenEdge ABL helps developers to rapidly develop applications optionally using its own integrated relational database and programming tool. These applications are portable across computing systems and allow access to various popular data sources without having to learn the underlying data access methods.

OpenEdge ABL and the OpenEdge database are typically combined by a value-added reseller to create a unique product. Because of the significant ease of use, the end-user of these products can be unaware of the underlying architecture.

Save - Christ complex

Christ complex (also superiority complex) is a psychological term used loosely to describe any individual mentally fixed on superiority or the claim of being a savior. There are many types of disorders in which the Christ complex comes into play. The extreme example is a psychopath: someone who comes to operate without any regard for other humans.

This term is used by psychologists in referring to people who feel a compulsion to try to save other human beings; i.e. attracted to single women with children who have been abused or distressed in an attempt to “save” them from their current lifestyle.

Quinquae viae - Chill (role-playing game)

Chill is a role-playing game that captures the feel of 20th-century horror films.<ref name=”RPGnet”></ref> Players take on the role of Envoys<ref name=”chill1rev”></ref>, members of a secret organization known as S.A.V.E. that tracks down and eliminates evil in the world. The overall flavour of the game is reflected in movies such as John Carpenter’s Vampires, the Hammer Horror films and The Omen.

The game was originally produced by a company called Pacesetter Ltd.<ref name=”RPGnet”/> Once Pacesetter ceased operations, Chill was bought by Mayfair Games. At Mayfair, the game was published until the executives of the company decided to no longer publish RPGs and instead focus on board games.

The game was most recently purchased by OtherWorld Creations, although it has not yet been re-printed. A series of financial problems plaguing the young company forced it to announce, on August 30th, 2004, the cessation of all publishing efforts except for Chill, which, it says, will be released in 2008.

A variety of individual modules (adventure packs) were released by Chill’s first two publishers. One example is UnDead & Buried, published by Mayfair Games.

Chill and some modules were translated into Swedish and published under the name Chock between 1985 and 1987 by Target Games.

S.A.V.E.

In Chill, S.A.V.E. (Societas Argenti Viae Eternitata, or, The Eternal Society of the Silver Way) is a secret society that is dedicated to protecting innocents from the creatures of the Unknown. Agents of SAVE are called Envoys.<ref name=”RPGnet”/> Though spread worldwide, SAVE can offer little support to its envoys, beyond pointing them at the Unknown and providing the occasional bit of additional research material. However, with the turn of the century this is beginning to change as SAVE has regrouped and reformed, ready to once again bring the fight to the Unknown.

SAVE is an acronym, the meaning of which differs according to what time period of SAVE you are examining. Originally, SAVE stood for the Societas Albae Viae Eternitata (The Eternal Society of the White Way). In the 1980’s, this was modified to the Societas Argenti Viae Eternitata (The Eternal Society of the Silver Way), ostensibly to avoid charges of racism.

SAVE began in 1844 with a single man: Professor Charles O’Boylan. Living in Dublin, Ireland, O’Boylan was fascinated with the possibilities of the brain. Not content to experiment with “occult mumbo jumbo,” he was convinced that there was a scientific explanation for psychic phenomenon, and he set his mind to finding it. What he found instead was something entirely different.

O’Boylan had experimented with his own seemingly supernatural powers of perception to a small degree, but he insisted on making his experiments “things of Pure Science,” and so, for almost a year, he carried out objective studies on psychic phenomenon.

No one is really sure of the outcome of these studies, because at the end of the year, O’Boylan destroyed all of his notes and abandoned his studies. “I have found a new and more worthy cause to champion,” he wrote in his new journal. “And my Enemy will regret showing His face to me.”

The “Enemy” O’Boylan wrote about was a seemingly intelligent and malevolent force he dubbed “the Unknown.” He wrote:

It is from this Source of Darkness that all Evil flows. It is not from Here, but from There, that dark place where mine eyes peered, my magical eyes that made me so proud… So vain.

O’Boylan recruited two other men – Henry Boulton and Richard Arthur (Lord Strange) – to create a secret society devoted to fighting this Enemy. O’Boylan dubbed the organization “SAVE,” or Societas Albae Viae Eternitata (the Eternal Society of the White Way). O’Boylan’s scientific knowledge coupled with Lord Strange’s understandings of the occult and Henry Boulton’s skills at gentlemanly combat formed a perfect circle to study and do battle with the Unknown. The year was 1844.

Save - Save-On-Foods

Save-On-Foods is a chain of supermarkets located across the Western Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Alberta. It is a subsidiary of the Overwaitea Food Group, which, in turn, is owned by the Jim Pattison Group. Stores carry both standard brand names and private label brands, such as Western Family, Western Classics, Value Priced, and Body Zone. Many stores have pharmacies, and some locations provide other services, including nutrition tours, health clinics, photo labs and Changes Recycling Centres.

A number of stores currently running as Save-On-Foods formerly operated under the Overwaitea brand until they were gradually converted during the expansion of the Save-On chain.

It is the namesake company of the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre in Victoria, British Columbia.

In popular culture

  • In Hong Kong comedy film, It’s a MAD MAD World 2 (富貴迫人), Save-On Foods is the supermarket the family visits and buys the lottery tickets.
  • During the 1980s in Burnaby, B.C., the store earned the unflattering nickname “Cave-In Foods” when the rooftop parking lot of a flagship new store at Metrotown/Station Square shopping centre caved into the market area on opening day. The incident sparked a popular joke in the area: “What’s the difference between most grocery stores and Save-On Foods? Most stores bring your groceries to your car; Save-On brings your car to your groceries.”
  • During an inquest to determine what happened, a representative of Tamm Tacy and Associates, the engineering firm that designed the store, advised the commission, “There appears to have been an error in calculation or in reading from the table for that specific [key roof] beam.” Two independent engineering reports confirmed the undersized beam was the cause for the collapse.

Save - Marginal propensity to save

The marginal propensity to save (MPS) refers to the increase in saving (non-purchase of current goods and services) that results from an increase in income. For example, if a family earns one extra dollar, and the marginal propensity to save is 0.35, then of that dollar, the family will spend 65 cents and save 35 cents. It can also go the other way, referring to the decrease in saving that results from a decrease in income. It is crucial to Keynesian economics and is the key variable in determining the value of the multiplier.

Mathematically, the marginal propensity to save (MPS) function is expressed as the derivative of the savings (S) function with respect to disposable income (Y).

<math>MPS=\frac{dS}{dY}</math>

In other words, the marginal propensity to save is measured as the ratio of the change in saving to the change in income, thus giving us a figure between 0 and 1. It is the opposite of the marginal propensity to consume (MPC). In the example above, the marginal propensity to consume would be 0.65. In a two sector closed economy MPS = 1 - MPC.

Sava - Drina Banovina

The Drina Banovina or Drina Banate (Serbian and Bosnian: Дринска бановина/Drinska banovina) was a province (banovina) of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia between 1929 and 1941. Its capital was at Sarajevo and it included portions of present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. It was named after the Drina River and, like all Yugoslav banovinas, was intentionally not based on ethnic boundaries.

Borders

According to the 1931 Constitution of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia,

The Drina Banovina is bounded on the west, as far as the Sava, by the boundaries … of the Littoral and Vrbas Banovinas, then on the north by the river Sava to where it is joined by the Kolubara. From this confluence and up to the eastern boundary of the Maritime Banovina (eastern boundary of the district of Konjic, hill 2058 in the Treskavica mountains) the boundary of the Drina Banovina follows the eastern boundaries of the districts of Posava (capital, Obrenovac), Tamnava, Kolubara (capital, Mionica) and Požega, including the district of Ljubić. It then follows the eastern boundaries of the districts of Trnava and Dragačevo, then the southern and western boundaries of the district of Moravica, continuing along the southern boundaries of the districts of Arilje, Zlatibor, Višegrad, Čajniče, Rogatica, and Sarajevo.

History

In 1941, the World War II Axis Powers occupied the Drina Banovina and the province was abolished and divided between the Independent State of Croatia and German-occupied Serbia. Following World War II, the region was divided between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia within a federal Socialist Yugoslavia.

To: Save - Average propensity to consume

Average propensity to consume (APC) is the percentage of income spent. To find the percentage of income spent, one needs to divide consumption by income, or
<math>APC=\frac{C}{Y}</math>. In an economy in which each individual consumer saves lots of money, there is a tendency of people losing their jobs because demand for goods and services will be low. Thus saving as a leakage is an advantage from the savers’ point of view, while for the economy as a whole it is a considerable disadvantage.

Sometimes, disposable income is used as the denominator instead, so
<math>APC=\frac{C}{Y-T}</math>.

Where C is the amount spent, Y is pre-tax income, and T is taxes

The inverse is the average propensity to save (APS).

Undergoing construction in a - Fill trestle

A fill trestle is a bridge that is built to provide a scaffolding for the construction of a fill or an earthen dam. Typically, the trestle is built across the valley and a railroad track is laid across the trestle. Specially designed side-dumping railroad cars filled with earth or gravel are pushed onto it and dumped, burying the trestle. Typically, a fill trestle is constructed out of wood which remains buried in the fill and eventually decomposes. Advances in construction technology, particularly the development of the dump truck, have rendered the fill trestle technique obsolete.

Of God’s existence - Ocean View, Viet Nam

Ocean View, was the northernmost U.S. military outpost in South Vietnam during that country’s existence. The primary reason for its existence was an attempt to prevent infiltration of troops through the demilitarized zone and North Vietnam into I Corps and South Vietnam.

The position had an excellent view of infiltrators running the white sand gauntlet about 2.5 miles to the West.

That it was somewhat successful was demonstrated by the North Vietnamese armed force attempting to over-run the position at least twice: once around September 17 1968 and on February 22 1969.

Ways - Committee of Ways and Means

In the English Parliament (later the British Parliament and UK Parliament) between 1641 and 1967, proposals for raising taxation originated in the Committee of Ways and Means, where they were initiated by a Government minister. The committee was copied by the legislature of the United States where it currently exists as the powerful U.S. House Committee on Ways and Means.

With effect from 1967 that Committee was abolished. The Chairman of Ways and Means presided over that Committee; and though Speakers have sometimes presided at Budgets since abolition of the Committee (as, for example, in 1968 and 1989), the Chairman does still generally occupy the chair during the speech.

The Chairman of Ways and Means is the title given to the Deputy Speaker who is appointed on a motion tabled at the beginning of each Parliament by the Leader of the House. The Chairman of Ways and Means has two deputies: the 1st and 2nd Deputy Chairman of Ways and Means. Thus there are three deputy Speakers who may take the Chair in the place of the Speaker.

In the British Parliament, the Speaker and his deputies are considered independent and as such they do not normally vote, except for casting votes, and they are not included in the figures of party strengths within the House of Commons.

The term “Ways and Means” refers to the provision of revenue to meet national expenditure and to forward the objectives of economic policy. Ways and Means are principally provided by the imposition of taxation - the Budget resolutions are Ways and Means resolutions, upon which the Finance Bill is based - but also by the raising of loans and provision made as occasion arises for the payment of sums into the Consolidated Fund or the National Loans Fund.

The current Chairman of Ways and Means is Sir Alan Haselhurst.
