May stand for: World - Where We Stand

Where We Stand is the second Yellowcard album that was released in 1999 (re-released in 2004 and 2005).

This album differs from all the other albums, particularly since this was before Ryan Key (current lead vocalist and guitarist) joined the band. It was released by Takeover Records, a label created by one of the band’s guitarists, Ben Harper. The music is a mix between progressive rock and metal and is instrumentally based. As the name suggests, the album describes where the band stands on the world and includes philosophy and rebellion. It is
currently out-of-print.

  • “On the Brink” has a hidden track at the end of the song.
  • The album features several soundbites from the classic videogame Street Fighter.
  • The cover art for the album was inspired by the work of Japanese ukiyo-e artist, possibly Utagawa Hiroshige.
  • The song “April 20th” was written about the Columbine High School Massacre, being sympathetic to the victims.

Save - Temporary folder

In computing, a temporary folder or temporary directory is a directory used to hold temporary files. Many operating systems and some software automatically delete the contents of this directory at bootup or at regular intervals.

For security reasons, it is best for each user to have his own temporary directory, since there has been a history of security vulnerabilities with temporary files due to programs incorrect file permissions or race conditions.

When a user opens an attached file from Outlook or other email utilities, the default save location is often an obscurely-named temporary folder (e.g. C:\Documents and Settings\Nathan Larson\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\S9QNS9UR\). Thus, it is easy, after modifying the file, to inadvertently save the file there upon closing it, and have no idea where to find it later. If this happens, a way to find the file may be to open the original attachment again and attempt to save it; this will usually show the temporary folder’s path where the modified file is located.

Traditional locations

In MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows, the temporary folder is set by the environment variable TEMP. Originally the default was c:\Temp, then C:\Windows\Temp. In modern versions, the temporary folder is set per-user as Local Settings\Temp.

In Unix and Linux, the global temporary directories are /tmp and /var/tmp. Typically, /var/tmp is for more permanent files, and /tmp is for more temporary files. See Filesystem Hierarchy Standard.

Proofs - Yuri I. Manin

Yuri Ivanovitch Manin (b. 1937) is a Russian mathematician, known for work in algebraic geometry and diophantine geometry, and many expository works ranging from mathematical logic to theoretical physics.

Manin was born in Simferopol. He gained a doctorate in 1960 at the Steklov Mathematics Institute as a student of Igor Shafarevich. He is now a Professor and Director of the Max-Planck-Institut für Mathematik in Bonn, and a professor at Northwestern University.

Manin’s early work included papers on the arithmetic and formal groups of abelian varieties, the Mordell conjecture in the function field case, and algebraic differential equations. The Gauss-Manin connection is a basic ingredient of the study of cohomology in families of algebraic varieties. He wrote an influential book on cubic surfaces and cubic forms, showing how to apply both classical and contemporary methods of algebraic geometry, as well as nonassociative algebra. He also indicated the role of the Brauer group, via Grothendieck’s theory of global Azumaya algebras, in accounting for obstructions to the Hasse principle, setting off a generation of further work.
He has also written on Yang-Mills theory, quantum information, and mirror symmetry.

Manin had over 40 doctoral students, including Alexander Beilinson, Vladimir Drinfeld, Vyacheslav Shokurov and Victor Kolyvagin. He
was awarded the Schock Prize in 1999 and the Cantor Medal in 2002.

Alternative name - Ethel (XM)

Ethel is the modern rock/alternative channel on XM Satellite Radio. It is the daughter channel of Fred (ch 44), which covers alternative music from its birth through the early 1990s; and the sister channel of Lucy (ch 54), which plays only the most popular alternative hits from the 80s through today. Ethel plays the latest alternative music, today’s top alternative hits, and recent hits. Some Ethel promos say “We pick up where Fred left off”.

Ethel originated as a DJ-free and uncensored channel, but has since lost its “xL” explicit language rating, and is now hosted by a DJ every now and then. The channel was originally programmed by legendary-alternative programmer Rick Lambert [1] and former Stabbing Westward keyboardist, Walter Flakus. In April 2006, Steve Kingston (former Z100 and WXRK PD) began programming Ethel in an attempt to move the channel in a more FM minded direction. This move has been criticized heavily, especially on the XM Fan forum. There is a whole hate thread about Kingston making this move.

Ethel is located on channel 47 on XM Satellite Radio and channel 834 on DirecTV.

Proofs - Cardioid

In geometry, the cardioid is an epicycloid with one cusp. That is, a cardioid is a curve that can be produced as the path (or locus) of a point on the circumference of a circle as that circle rolls around another fixed circle with the same radius.

The cardioid is also a special type of limaçon: it is the limaçon with one cusp. The cusp is formed when the ratio of a to b in the equation is equal to one.

The name comes from the heart shape of the curve (Greek kardioeides = kardia:heart + eidos:shape). Compared to the heart symbol (♥), though, a cardioid only has one sharp point (or cusp). It is rather shaped more like the outline of the cross section of a plum.

The cardioid is an inverse transform of a parabola.

The large central figure in the Mandelbrot set is a cardioid.

Caustics can take the shape of cardioids. The caustic seen at the bottom of a coffee cup, for instance, may be a cardioid. The specific curve depends on the angle the light source makes relative to the bottom of the cup. The shape can be a nephroid, which looks quite similar.

Equations

Since the cardioid is an epicycloid with one cusp, in cartesian coordinates it has parametric equations

<math> x(t) = 2r \left( \cos t - {1 \over 2} \cos 2 t \right),</math>
<math> y(t) = 2r \left( \sin t - {1 \over 2} \sin 2 t \right)</math>

where r is the radius of the circles which generate the curve, and the fixed circle is centered at the origin. The cusp
is at (r,0).

The polar equation

<math> \rho(\theta) = 2r(1 - \cos \theta). \ </math>

yields a cardioid with the same shape. It is the same curve as the cardioid given above, shifted to the left r units, so
the cusp is at the origin.

For a proof, see cardioid proofs.

Graphs

Four graphs of cardioids oriented in the four cardinal directions, with their respective polar equations.

Area

The area of a cardioid with polar equation

<math> \rho(\theta) = a(1 - \cos \theta) </math>

is

<math> A = {3\over 2} \pi a^2 </math>.

See proof.

Ways - 1001 Ways to Beat the Draft

1001 Ways to Beat the Draft” is a satirical Vietnam War protest pamphlet written in 1966 by Robert Bashlow and Beat Generation artist Tuli Kupferberg.

The text reels through dozens of ways that young men facing conscription during the Vietnam War could avoid service. Kupferberg leaves no societal more unscathed in this anti-war pamphlet, which is considered one of the most notable antiwar publications<ref>Charters, Ann. “Robert Bly”. Ways. - Homeotropic alignment

In liquid crystals, homeotropic alignment is one of the ways of alignment of liquid crystalline molecules. Homeotropic alignment is the state in which a rod-like liquid crystalline molecule aligns perpendicularly to the substrate. In the polydomain state, the parts also are called homeotropic domains. In contrast, the state in which the molecule aligns to a substance in parallel is called homogeneous alignment.

There are various other ways of alignment in liquid crystals. Because homeotropic alignment is not anisotropy optically, a dark field is observed between crossed polarizers in polarizing optical microscopy.
By conoscope observation, however, a cross image is observed in the homeotropic alignments. Homeotropic alignment often appears in the smectic A phase (SA).

In discotic liquid crystals homeotropic alignment is defined as the state in which an axis of the column structure, which is formed by disc-like liquid crystalline molecules, aligns perpendicularly to a substance. In other words, this alignment looks like a state in which columns formed by piled-up coins are arranged in an orderly way on a table.

Ways - Mysterious Ways (song)

Mysterious Ways” is the eighth track on U2’s 1991 album, Achtung Baby and was released as the album’s second single.

History

The song reached #9 on the Hot 100 (the previous single, “The Fly”, had only managed to reach #61) making it one of the band’s highest-charting singles in the U.S.; only three other U2 singles (”With or Without You”, “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”, and “Desire”) have reached higher positions. “Mysterious Ways” also topped both the Modern Rock Tracks chart and the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.

When played live on the Zoo TV Tour, this song featured a belly dancer on stage. The version played was extended, including a longer introduction with a piano part from The Edge. Also, a slide solo is featured after what was the end of the studio version of the song. Both the added intro and outro features added lyrics from Bono, much of which is sung in the falsetto. One of the dancers, Morleigh Steinberg, later married The Edge. It has been played on every tour since it debuted, appearing on every live video release since except for Elevation 2001: Live from Boston. Edge has always used a Rickenbacker 330-12 for this song.

When the covers to “Even Better Than the Real Thing”, “The Fly”, “Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses”, and “Mysterious Ways” are arranged, a picture of the band members driving a Trabant is formed.

The video had a belly dancing theme and was filmed by Stephane Sednaoui in Morocco.

Bobby Bryant was a cornerback for the Minnesota Vikings during the days of the Purple People Eaters (late 1960’s thru early 1970’s). Predictably, he was often injured during his career, but when healthy, he was known as a big-play cornerback, often making a key interception to win a big game or to preserve a win when it appeared the opponent was about to score.

Hockey - Senior ice hockey

Senior hockey refers to amateur or semi-professional ice hockey competition for players too old to play junior hockey.

Senior hockey leagues should not be confused with professional hockey leagues such as the National Hockey League or its lower-tier brethren such as the American Hockey League and the ECHL. These leagues are professional leagues where players are generally presumed to have a chance, however slim, of advancing to the National Hockey League at some point.

The top senior amateur teams in Canadian leagues compete for the Allan Cup every year. Despite the low level of competition, some former NHLers such as Pat Falloon, Link Gaetz, and Eric Fichaud have played in senior hockey after washing out of the NHL, and some have achieved great success at this HIGH level in the twilight of their careers.
